Maria Florence
This is the story of an extraordinary woman, Lady Mrs. Maria Florence Ekeh, who had the dream of changing her community.

Lady Mrs. Maria Florence Ekeh
A village cries for help
In 1973 Maria Florence married the respected Chief Sir J. C. Ekeh and became an integral part of the family and community of Okagwe Item. Shortly after joining the village women’s association she was elected president. What she found there shook her to the core:
- No clinic: Pregnant women had to travel miles to neighboring villages to give birth â many died along the way or lost their babies.
- No regular school operation: Children were taught in a thatch-roofed building; teachers, due to poor infrastructure, often appeared only every few days.
- No clean water: Drinking water was fetched from polluted rivers and painstakingly filtered through clay pots.
- No proper market: Trading was only possible every eight days; the village’s supply situation was precarious.
- No electricity: Nights were dark, lit only by kerosene lamps.
The first successes â A sign of hope
Despite these massive challenges, Maria Florence managed to mobilize the women of the community, raise funds, and start initial projects:
- Market stalls: Construction of the first small stalls that promoted local trade.
- Community clinic: She donated her own family home to establish the first clinic.
- Water supply: After years of effort a rainwater tank was installed.
Each of these steps was an incredible act of courage, determination and love for the community.
The ongoing challenges
Despite these early successes development stagnated:
- The clinic fell into disrepair, so the sick again had to travel long distances to other villages.
- The market stalls have collapsed.
- The water supply is sufficient only in the rainy season â in dry seasons villagers still rely on dirty river water.
- The project to electrify the village has still not been completed even after more than 30 years.
To this day Okagwe Item continues to suffer under these intolerable conditions.
A legacy of hope
The struggle continues. Maria Florence and her husband had another major plan: the construction of a Catholic church for Okagwe Item. They donated land for it â but the death of Chief Sir J. C. Ekeh and a lack of financial resources prevented its realization.
Today we are committed to this cause and have expanded our mission to the reconstruction and revitalization of the entire community. This church is intended to serve multiple purposes. Now we would like to take a step further with you and have an ambitious goal in mind. But we need your support.
Our goal
- Construction of a new health center: Basic medical care on site
- Construction of a church: A center for community and spirituality
- Establishment of a proper school: Continuous education for the village’s children
- Access to clean water: Protection from disease through clean water supply
- Creation of a stable market: Strengthening the local economy
- Connection to the power grid: Light and electricity for education, commerce and safety
Your support makes a big difference
Your partnership means more than just infrastructure â it means:
